Projeto de praça pública implantada em um terreno onde antes havia um incinerador de lixo. Usando a contaminação do solo como tema, o projeto prescreve os caminhos da praça pousando um deck de madeira, suspenso a um metro do chão. Ao longo de um percurso de 600 metros, o visitante pode encontrar informações dos sistemas de sustentabilidade usados, como filtragem das águas sujas por sistemas orgânicos aeróbicos. As the result of an innovative public-private partnership in Brazil, the project converts a 140,000 square feet brown-field site in São Paulo, Brazil, into a lively public plaza. In using the ever-growing problem of brown-fields as the theme for the design itself, the project brings a positive spin to the problem of urban contamination and proposes a sustainable solution that weaves sociopolitical, cultural and environmental elements into a productive design.
The site of a garbage incinerator for 40 years, the area was classified as a contaminated hotspot by the City and destined to be capped by 5 feet of dirt. The design proposal flips the problem into the project’s main asset, avoiding the site capping by proposing a raised deck to sit above the contaminated soil and inviting users into an environment of sustainability. Exhibit panels explain the soil’s contamination problem and the various sustainable processes used in the plaza, including the recycling of wood, plant specimens used for the production of bio-energy and medicine, phytoremediation, hydroponic systems and genetic engineering. Visitors also learn about the low-tech self-irrigation system used and the wetland garden that cleans the restroom brown water for irrigation. Built out of certified Brazilian hardwood, and like the frame of a ship, the deck unfolds between the horizontal and vertical planes, creating places that are defined by the three-dimensionality of the form, like great outdoor rooms.
